When I was studying to become a life coach, I was asked, "If you could only impart one lesson to your children, what would it be?" the question made me reevaluate how I was parenting my kids. The answer I came up with was apart from teaching them about having a relationship God I wanted to teach them the skill of managing their mind.
Before I answered this question, I thought it was my job to teach them how to clean, cook, study, and make good grades. I focused on teaching them to follow instructions, be polite, and have a strong work ethic.
Although all of those things have value to them, they are not as valuable as teaching them how to manage their minds. And here is why
People can have a college degree, money, fame, and social status. They can have Pinterest perfect homes and cook like a food network chef, but if they could not find meaning and fulfillment in their lives. Then everything would not matter much.
Finding fulfillment and meaning can only be obtained by managing your thoughts and feelings.
When people can manage their thought life, whether they have all the things mentioned above or not, they can still be happy. Have meaningful relationships and thrive throughout their life.
I coach my kids all the time, and most of the time, they don't even know.
My focus is now on teaching them.
That other people's opinions don't matter.
That fear can be both useful and useless if it stops you from living your dream.
Squashing out the negative self-talk in their mind is imperative.
That failing is a part of succeeding.
And how they choose to think, feel, and behave is all on them. Always.
All of this shifted because a coach asked me just one question.
